Because we are simply not great at assessing competence, perceptions are just as important for success as actual competence, according to this article.
The author says that projecting an optimistic attitude by displaying more confidence in your abilities, will bring recognition for your competence and contributions.
He continues saying that if someone asks how you expect to perform, you should give a positive, confident response. A negative forecast may lead you to be perceived as distinctly less competent — no matter how well you perform.
